one thing you shouldn’t skimp on when designing a space…

LIGHTING

Why lighting deserves investment when you're renovating or designing your home:

Good lighting design goes beyond just illuminating a space. It's a key design element that can dramatically impact the feel, function, and even value of your home. Here's why lighting deserves an investment:

Sets the Mood and Ambiance:

Good lighting can completely transform a space, while bad, lighting can completely ruin it. It can create a warm and inviting atmosphere or a bright and energetic one. Dimmers and layered lighting allow you to adjust the mood depending on the activity. Imagine a harsh overhead light in a living room versus strategically placed lamps and sconces - it makes a big difference in how cozy and relaxing the space feels. In multi-use rooms like living rooms, I try to layer recessed lighting with wall sconces, table lamps and sometimes a chandelier or floor lamp depending on the space!

Impacts Functionality:

Task lighting is essential in areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and workspaces. Proper lighting ensures you have enough light to see clearly for activities like cooking, applying makeup, or reading. Dim or uneven lighting can strain your eyes and make tasks frustrating. Again, layering light in these areas is essential to increase functionality and comfort of these spaces. In a kitchen, I will layer recessed lighting, pendants, sconces, cabinet lighting and sometimes even lamps.

Highlights Design Features:

Lighting can be used to draw attention to architectural details, artwork, or other design elements. Well-placed spotlights can make a beautiful painting pop, while strategically placed recessed lights can accentuate a high ceiling. Without proper lighting, these features can go unnoticed. Lighting can also be a design feature all in itself; a dramatic chandelier makes for a statement entryway, or a historical fixture can add charm and character.

Improves Safety and Security:

Well-lit walkways, entrances, and driveways can deter crime and prevent accidents. Dimly lit areas can be hazardous, especially for elderly people or those with mobility issues.

Long-Term Value:

While the upfront cost of good quality fixtures and a well-designed lighting plan might seem higher, it's an investment that pays off in the long run. Durable fixtures last longer, and a well-designed plan can save you money on electricity bills. Replacing cheap fixtures and constantly reworking poor lighting plans ends up costing more in the long run.

In short, lighting is more than an afterthought – it's a crucial element of good interior design. By investing in a thoughtful lighting plan, you'll create a home that's both beautiful and functional.
